Faith Stories in a Gentle, Familiar Format
For many families in the United Kingdom, Bible stories are part of childhood, Christian traditions and meaningful moments spent together. Stories about Jesus can be shared at home, during quiet reading time or as part of family traditions.
Every child experiences stories differently. Some autistic and neurodivergent children may prefer clear language, simple illustrations, familiar characters and stories they can revisit without feeling rushed.
Degan Doodles Bible stories are created by Sarah, an autistic author whose lived experience helps shape the books' visual simplicity and respectful approach to learning and communication.
The aim is to provide a gentle way for children to discover familiar Christian stories through pictures, repetition and shared reading.
Why Repetition Can Be Helpful
Some children enjoy hearing the same story many times. Familiar words, repeated illustrations and a predictable sequence can make reading feel more comfortable and enjoyable.
Repetition also offers opportunities to pause, name characters, point towards illustrations or revisit a favourite part of the story.
Children may participate by speaking, pointing, listening, turning pages, looking at pictures or simply sitting nearby.
There is no single correct way for a child to connect with a story.
Simple Visual Storytelling
Clear illustrations and simple page compositions give children visual points of reference as a story unfolds.
Degan Doodles uses intentionally uncluttered layouts rather than busy pages. This approach may be particularly welcoming for children who prefer calmer visual information.
For children who do not use spoken language, illustrations can also create shared moments of attention without requiring verbal answers.
